a robot as the only actor in a dance piece and a space that starts moving -- kubic's cube aims at a dance beyond the human body. pablo ventura sees his new work as intensive choreographic research into what 'dance expression' is. [how] can the illusion be produced, with the help of movement and sound, so that a machine dances?

installation:

the three and a half meter-high aluminium robot kubic hangs from the ceiling in a dark room. kubic, developed by the canadian robot-specialist louis-philippe demers, moves itself according to the construction of its limbs to the sound of francisco lópez's sound installation. pablo ventura has developed a choreography in which the static positions and coincidental interactive movement patterns produce the illusion that the robot is alive.

performance:

details of kubic's assembly will be projected back onto him: a video camera films the construction and shows pictures as it were from the inside of the robot. kubic throws shadows on the four walls. it is a choreography of space, a cubist kinetic sculpture of which kubic, an instrument of rhythmic movement, is the centre.

the choreograph pablo ventura operates the robot 'live'. francisco lópez, a famous exponent of electronic minimal music, also operates his environment in the performances himself. with sounds especially composed for the piece, he creates differentiated mechanistic atmospheres, that invite the viewer to discover kubic's cube from different perspectives.
