fades is a video installation for an especially designed environment where the visual is not in the foreground. the installation deals with light and sound as material, not as visual content. very fine mist is sprayed into the room, materialising the white light. where the forms appear on the surface is irrelevant. they were already there before, in transition. the basic elements grow out of the black into the white. they develop through fades synchronised with the sound, passing through various linear, logarythmic, para and hyperbolic processes. a mathematical vocabulary hides behind the sound and image. fades plays with the idea of 'discovering' this language, which results from complex combinations of mathematical figures -- in order to show us a possibility of communication beyond the horizon of our understanding, strange and different enough to become a universal medium. the fades which give the work its title become metaphors for the way in which we become conscious of language or ideas -- in the sense of a realisation or an enlightenment.'

carsten nicolai [d]
born 1965 in karl marx stadt. lives in berlin and chemnitz.

the german artist and musician carsten nicolai uses electronic sound and visual art as a tool of synthesis for his own microscopic insight into creative processes. his world is like a laboratory, his medium an organism, constantly morphing in space and time and influenced by the impulses of current media. sound as language and code is a central theme, realised and visualised through sound performances and installations.
